“Terra Nova” – Portraits of Refugee Youth in New York City

The Lio Malca Gallery opened an exhibition of portraits of young refugees in New York by photographer Emmanuel André

The show explored what the American dream means to young people who have fled conflict and persecution and are starting their lives over.

The images featured refugees from Bhutan, Liberia, Burma, Mauritania and elsewhere who participate in the International Rescue Committee's "Leaders in Training" program, which helps newly arrived refugee students realize their academic and leadership potential.

The 24 photographs in the exhibition were selected from a portfolio that will be published in the summer 2009 issue of Trace magazine. Sale of the images benefited the International Rescue Committee's New York Refugee Youth Program.
