ARTEXPO NEW YORK 2009
02/26/2009 - By Jacob Javits Center

ARTEXPO NEW YORK 2009

From February 26 – March 2, Artexpo New York, the world’s largest international art fair returned to the Jacob Javits Center exhibiting the most exciting emerging and established artists, innovative artworks, and the latest trends in the art world.

Over 300 artists, publishers and galleries from the U.S., Europe, Asia, Africa and South America, gathered together to showcase, the most exciting and emerging paintings, drawings, sculpture, mixed media, frames, jewelry, and photography, over five days. Attendance was up 3% from last year with 8,500 trade professionals visiting the show.

“Though we’re facing one of the toughest economic downturns in decades, this year’s show saw unprecedented attendance, providing a valuable resource for consumers and professionals to find deals, network, and stay on top of trends and for consumers to purchase and enjoy affordable art, ” said Eric Smith, Vice President of Summit Business Media.

Artexpo proved to be a key networking event for both attendees and exhibitors. First time SOLO artist T.S. McFadden was impressed by the serious interest from buyers. “Within the first hour, we paid for our booth space. The response and exposure was phenomenal.” said Mr. McFadden. Other exhibitors shared similar sentiments: “There was a fantastic cross-section of buyers at this show. We were able to write orders and network with the key people we wanted to meet.” said Jeff Linton of Wild Apply Graphics.

Landscapes and floral pieces were the trend this year, with many trade attendees picking up both abstract and realistic depictions of nature. SOLO artist Jeremy Bortz’s Flowers of Hope series nearly sold out during the show while Progressive Fine Art sold out of three of its artist’s work: Irina Koulikov’ s contemporary florals, Joan Armour’s landscapes and the artist Nemo’s collage-style cityscapes.

This year Artexpo continued its tradition of offering exciting special events, renowned speakers, and educational seminars. Highlights included the following:

The Artexpo Design Center
Through a partnership with ASID (The American Society of Interior Designers), visitors to the Artexpo Design Center received free interior design consultations on how to incorporate newly purchased art in their homes, offices or galleries. For trade attendees, ASID members also hosted various lectures on art and interior design during the International Art Business Conference. Seminars included: “How to Work with an Interior Designer” and “The Art of Trends.”

The Global Green Artists Challenge
Environmental artist and advocate Wyland returned to the show this year to kick off the Global Green Artists Challenge, a year-long series of art industry and public events focusing on the relationship between art and the environment. Wyland conducted a New York City Public School art contest and invited 28 students from the winning class to paint an aquatic themed mural with him. Additionally, on the opening consumer day of the show, Wyland and fellow exhibitor Jane Seymour hosted a special event where more than 200 children and their families painted live at Artexpo with green paint and eco-friendly materials.

International Art Business Conference Seminars
The International Art Business Conference (IABC) offered more than 20 lectures over three days, including: color forecasts “The Origins of Color” and “Color Pulse 2010” from Benjamin Moore Paint experts; a one-man show on urban art by artist Justin Bua; and expert lectures on how to remain profitable during an economic recession.

Olympic Artwork Unveiling
Fine Art Limited, the official representative of Olympic artwork for the 2010 Winter Games, hosted an exclusive unveiling at this year’s show. This special event featured artwork from Alexander Chen, Jane Seymour, Wyland and also announced that veteran artists Aldo Luongo and Leroy Neiman will create official Olympic artwork for the 2010 games.

International Artexpo shows will take place in various markets throughout the fall and winter of 2009. Artexpo Las Vegas is scheduled for September 15 – 16, DECOR Expo Atlanta is slated for September 12-14, Art Miami is scheduled for December 2 – 6, 2009.
